Debian and Nokia N97

Been there, done that.

  1. Well, I don't like Android much for its Google roots.
Google is perfect in building stuff around its services and bind it to them. I really don't want Google to control my communication.

  2. (In short: hardware is great, software definitely needs work, but is in flux, thus that can be tricky)

I have a N97, and except for the amount of RAM, the hardware is top-notch. Nothing to say wrong about that. After the first software upgrade most of the odd issues where also resolved, which made the device very pleasant to use.

As for syncing….. painful as you'll have to make an app yourself for the time being. On Windows there is PC Sync and in Beta there is OVI, sync/backup/etc all work fine, though Calendar can only be truely synced to Outlook, not to Firefox etc. On Mac one can sync that to iCal, which is what one would want.

I have on my todo list (which is long though, but I'll give this prio) to make a proper iCal sync app, on the device itself, thus that it fetches an iCal URL over webdav to sync up the calendar, and other things.

The problem with S60 at the moment though is that everything is moving to Symbian Foundation, as such, from a developer point of view it is quite annoying to start working on something new, knowing that it is on the way out[1]. Of course it won't go that quickly, but sooner or later your code will have to be redone to match the QT version to be relevant.

There are various BlueTooth OBEX sync projects out there which can at least copy your data, but IMHO using bluetooth is annoying when I have wifi/gprs to sync over.

As for SSH: PuTTY for S60 has a special Touch version, which works like a charm (minus the fact that it does not have internal scrollback).

The problem with mail is that the amounts I am getting, a little device, with so little mem, as an N97 (or for that matter any other phone) simply won't cope with it. Too little screen estate also, thus quite hard to keep track of things. Except for Profimail, the mailclients that are on N97 per “default” (Mail for Exchange and Nokia Messenger) are unabe to handle larger quantities of mail. And of course they don't support my beloved PGP.

  3. There should be a syncml client on the phone. I use it to sync my N80 with an egroupware server (Contacts, Calender and tasks). Works fine!

  4. Well, nice to hear it is basically working, but I would prefer to not install a huge groupware just to sync some data for myself. 😉
    But maybe there's a alternative for a whole groupware…?

  5. Nice to hear someone who actually owns the N97 and have some experiences with it!

I conclude from your comment that the N97 is actually a nice and decent smartphone with some minor problems that might be solved soon.

If you need a betatester for iCal syncing, I'd volunteer when I got my N97… 🙂

    Thx for your input!

  6. My thoughts exactly, but having something that works is a great first step 🙂

Thus, I am now installing eGroupware; yes it requires a MySQL or PostgreSQL, but I have the first already, the box also runs Apache, thus that is not a huge requirement either; now waiting for the backup of the phone and then lets see if everything works or not…. 😉 Will reply back if what how and what the resource usage is.

Btw, another “disadvantage” of N97 is that SIP is not enabled, that is the SIP client found in the various E71 and other models, even N series, is not on the phone. The stack itself apparently is present, but as one does not have the client one can't use it.
Apparently PJSIP can make use of it, but didn't have time yet to delve into that yet. (But as my new FreeSWITCH setup now does work like a charm….. I might want to actually do that sooner or later too) There is a claim from Nokia that N97 is supposed to do both Skype and SIP, and that an update for that is forthcoming in Q3, thus only time will find out if that is really the case…. (There are other SIP clients of course that works, but they tend to send your voice through a 3rd party server instead of truly doing SIP from the phone itself)

  7. The settings of the nokia sycnml is a bit tricky, use “./contacts” (contacts) and “./caltasks” (calendar) as external database. Contacts and database are the only modules i use.

  8. Thanks to Florian Bittner's comment, and as mentioned above, I set up the eGroupware stuff, which indeed might be a bit bulky, but remember that syncML is simply bulky. The code seems decent (I don't seem to get too many errors/warnings in the php log thus that is good) and it simply WORKS.

I've also set up a sync to Thunderbird/Lightning using the Funambol sync client, that way I have all my stuff on my phone, laptop and on the server, all in sync 😉

I've copied the instructions on how to set up this stuff (except for eGroupware for which one just can follow the instructions of the debian packaging) in http://unfix.org/projects/network/sync/ just in case the original sites get changed/go missing, as this works for me(tm).

    Enjoy 😉
